As a parents, we strive hard to ensure that we give our children the best things in life. These includes food, shelter, clothing, education etc. When it comes to education, we even dig deeper into our pockets to make sure that they get best education to equip them with skills and knowledge that the market requires. In a world that changing fast, how do we keep up with the technology? How do we prepare our children to adapt into the new normal in the era of technology? We all agree that the education system focus on training our children on memorizing stuff rather than being creative in solving the ever increasing global challenges. Well, if I were you, I would enroll my child into a coding school Ever heard of the term Coding? NO…I GOT YA!
What the Heck is coding? Before I tell you more about coding. Let’s talk parent to parent. Education penetrated in Kenya during the colonial era. The wise parents who took their children to school those days against all odd clearly showed us the benefit of being ahead of the game. We can already see the results. It’s where the first Kenyan leaders came from after we gained independence. Be it a chief, a teacher, bankers, news anchors, politicians of the time. Then later, everybody embraced education and literacy levels increased tremendously with more universities and colleges opening up. So what set the generation of the 80s apart? It was type writing. Secretarial jobs were in the peak and in fact the government opened secretarial schools. For your information, the current Law school in parklands by University of Nairobi used to be a secretarial training school. In the 90s came the computers, then the laptops and am not surprised that you could be reading this post from your personal computer or computerized enabled Smart Phone! That’s how fast the technology grows. In a world where majority of Kenyans have not only a University degree but masters or sometimes PHD, what will set our children apart? How do we prepare them for not only the present but the future job market? How do prepare them to handle the future opportunities to solve the current and future world challenges. It’s by training them to CODE!
Now I can go back to telling you what coding is. Coding is the art of telling a computer how to perform complex tasks. If you think of your phone, how many apps do you have? Whats APP, Safaricom App, Instagram, Facebook, Uber, Banking apps, Shopping Apps etc. AM sure you have a few of these. We all love them as they make our work easier and fun. So, how do all these APPs come about? It’s through Coding. Think of computer games that our kids love. Think about the robots etc…The website that you are using to read this amazing content…well, whether you like it or not, the future is coding. In the future, not knowing the language of computers (CODING) will be as challenging as being illiterate today. You better prepare your child for it. (don’t say I didn’t tell you)
Why is coding so vital for your child? We are already living in a world dominated by software. Your phone calls go over software-controlled networks; your television is delivered over the internet; you no longer need to go asking around for new places or get a map because you can navigate with your phone. We all shop online and have it delivered into our door step. The next generation’s world will be even more online and digital. Soon, your house will be controlled with software, some of your medical care will be delivered over the web and your car may even drive itself. This is clear indication of rising demand of IT professional.
