Why Weaning Workshop
Have you registered for the weaning workshop? If not yet, DO IT NOW? Where do you get to hear from professional Nutritionist for just Ksh 500? Imagine having this one platform for to even learn from fellow moms on how they go about weaning?
I know you are thinking in your head, why do I need to attend this weaning workshop? I have always fed my babies just right. Well, we are all students of life. I thought I was doing everything right but my baby was not gaining weight. I tried all the best recipes but nothing worked. In fact, feeding time was a nightmare. It was real war and stressful moments for me. Do not underestimate the power of a toddler who doesn’t want to eat. She will kick you away, cry, keep the food in the mouth for hours or worse still, and blow it out of her mouth. I can’t count the number of time my baby has washed me with food from her mouth. With continued growth, she has identified her favorite food. Meaning, she is not only a fussy eater but a picky eater. She loves her scrambled eggs (though it triggers her eczema), she hates spinach or any green thing in the food. She hates milk but you can’t quench her thirst for yoghurt. She distastes beans, she loves peas. This made me cook certain food that she liked but were these foods meeting her nutritional requirement? Did I mention my struggle with constipation? OOOH MY! THAT LITTLE GIRL WOULD POOP STONE LIKE POOP! This is what most moms go through every day. I know you are among them but WOW MOM got you covered. If you have been through this, your baby could be at risk of malnutrition.
Malnutrition is a great public health problem in Kenya. It is the single greatest contributor to child mortality at 53%. Nearly 30% of Kenya’s children are under nourished with 26% stunted. About 1 in 10 children are obese/overweight. The affected children will never reach their full physical and mental potential. Although malnutrition indicators are improving, it is estimated that from 2010–2030 undernutrition will cost Kenya approximately US$38.3 billion in GDP due to losses in workforce productivity.
Malnutrition is mainly caused by either under or over supply of food. Under supply of nutrients leads to micronutrient deficiencies such as iron, vitamin A, Zinc, Folic acid, Vitamin D and iodine. Obesity on the other hand is caused by increased consumption of highly refined foods, added sugar, salts and fats as well as reduced physical activity and sedimentary lifestyle. The results is early and premature deaths, increased health care costs at household /national level and a vicious cycle of poverty.
Malnutrition is avoidable and preventable. By employing good feeding practices such as: Exclusive breastfeeding complementary feeding during a child’s first two years of life the situation can be reversed. Unfortunately, most moms are often at cross roads when weaning kicks off. They are bombarded with information and it becomes overwhelming not knowing when, how and what to feed their infants and toddlers. Parents deserve practical and trustworthy information on weaning.
